2 years ago I signed on for one of the biggest adventures of my life. Granted I didn’t know it at the time.
Fitness has always been a part of my life. I grew up as the only girl with 2 older brothers and a father that was a basketball coach. Needless to say I was always trying to keep up with the boys. I played basketball straight through college and was lucky enough to play for New York University and win a National Championship. After all those years of athletics I was excited at the opportunity to shut it down and be LAZY for a month or two. Needless to say a month or two turned into years and I got FAT. After years of no structure I was ready to get back into shape but I still was not ready to return to “gym” life. That’s when I discovered Beachbody. I know you have been there. You are up late at night or early in the morning. You are flipping through the channels and you come to the dreaded infomercial. (I can’t be the only one that always gets sucked into them!!! Can I?) I am not someone that ever buys anything from them but this time my interest was peaked. I was watching Tony Horton talk about P90X. Everyone in the commercial looked as fit as I wanted to be, even though I was currently far from that myself. The fitness routine was similar to what I knew about getting in shape in some ways but in other ways it was totally different then I had ever committed to doing. So I bought it……and like so many other people I didn’t open the box. It sat there for a while…..and then I got fat enough and tired enough that it was time to get started.
So I got started. Then I got my husband started. Together we were dropping weight and seeing results. Friends started noticing the changes we were making and that only boosted our confidence to keep going. One day a friend reached out and talked to me about some of the other opportunities that exist with Beachbody. At first, like most people, when I heard about Coaching I thought…that’s nice for you but I have a job (a REAL job) and I’m not interested in getting caught in your scam. I loved the products and was willing to buy them through her but I was NOT interested in becoming a coach. I continued working out. I heard about Shakeology and began drinking it every day. Eventually I finished P90X. I was so excited about my results that I ordered INSANITY and finished that too! I went from a total slacker that was doing nothing but sit around and eat take out to someone that finished 2 intense programs and was feeling good about myself.
So my friend reached out to me again.. Why not become a coach? I didn’t know the answer. I guess I just didn’t think I had it in me. I’m not a salesperson. In fact it makes me feel gross to even think about a sales job even today. So I continued to say no. She explained to me that I could become a coach and get a great discount on all of the products that I already buy on a regular basis. DISCOUNT! Well that made sense to me. I signed up. But there was no way I was actually going to coach. I just wanted the discount. However, the better I felt about myself the more people wanted to know why I was feeling so good. The answer was clear. My commitment to these 2 programs, Shakeology and to myself totally changed who I was. Or…maybe it just awakened something I let slide away too long ago. I loved the feeling of being able to talk to others about where they were in their journey and things they might want to try. I still wasn’t really coaching I was just being a friend. It was then that coaching made sense to me. So often we have struggles in our lives and it is hard to get out of our own way. Being a beachbody coach is more about offering a helping hand to someone when they need it then anything else. It is so rewarding to be able to help others when they don’t know where else to turn.
Now I get asked all the time, what does it mean to be a Beachbody coach. It means you are a person just like them that has struggled with fitness and/or nutrition and your working to be better. It means that you are willing to help them with their struggle and not be judgmental. It means that you are willing to support them through their journey, no matter what, and to help them see that even though everyone’s journey looks a little bit different we are all working towards the same goal of being a little bit better each day.
Now I’m in my upper 30’s. What started out as a hobby–posting on the Facebook and supporting people–has turned into something that I want to make a full-time business and passion. When you do what you love, work does not feel like work. For the first time in my life I am surrounded solely by people that encourage me daily. Living in that environment allows you to give so much more to those around you.
